Nepal’s Leadership Calls for Peaceful Talks Amid Rising Violence

Meanwhile, Nepalese President Ram Chandra Paudel urged citizens involved in the ‘Gen Z’ protests to seek peaceful dialogue to resolve the crisis. With Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli having resigned, the president emphasized the need to avoid further violence and destruction.

“I urge all sides to remain calm, prevent further harm, and come to the table for talks,” he said, highlighting the power of democratic dialogue in addressing citizens’ concerns.

The protests have turned deadly in recent days, with at least 19 people killed and hundreds injured after security forces fired on demonstrators outside the Federal Parliament. Protesters also stormed key government buildings, including the parliament and the President’s office at Shital Niwas.

The Nepal Army appealed for restraint, especially from the youth, to protect the nation’s cultural heritage. In Dang district, authorities imposed a curfew in major market areas following violent clashes, arson, and property damage.

The curfew bans all forms of public gatherings and protests as officials try to contain the unrest.

Protests Triggered by Social Media Ban and Calls for Government Accountability

The ‘Gen Z’ protests erupted on September 8 in Kathmandu and spread to cities like Pokhara, Butwal, and Birgunj after the government banned 26 major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and YouTube. Authorities cited concerns over tax revenue and cybersecurity as reasons for the ban.

Demonstrators are demanding an end to corruption and favoritism in governance, greater transparency, and the lifting of the social media ban, which they view as an attack on free speech.

Curfews have been imposed in several cities to curb the violence, but tensions remain high as the government tries to balance security concerns with citizens’ rights.
